Friday marked the countdown to Christmas as hundreds of lanterns dazzled through Church Street and Paradise Street.

The lanterns were paraded by hundreds of children, created by them in a number of workshops held by the Lantern Company to paint a picture of the Liverpool skyline.

This parade marked the start of Liverpool’s annual Ice Festival which sees the return of the outdoor Ice Skating rink, the chilly Ice Bar and Café and also a variety of ice sculptures throughout the city. The Ice Festival of 2013 has taken over Chavasse Park, Liverpool ONE for its enchanting homage to the festive season.

The spectacular parade weaved its way throughout Liverpool ONE and also featured performances by some of Liverpool’s most popular Christmas pantomimes. Pantomime stars such as Andrew Schofield (Dreaming of a Barry White Christmas) and Ray Quinn (Peter Pan) entertained the chilled crowds throughout the parade. 2012 ‘Voice of Merseyside’ winner Harriet Marshland also put on a performance of Christmas classics on the night.

The Lantern Company were also behind the spooky Halloween Lantern Carnival held in Sefton Park.

Christmas shoppers can expect to see a number of Christmas themed events throughout the city. Soon Church Street will see the return of the International Christmas Market, a huge event where shoppers can choose gifts from five different continents.

These events are part of a wider campaign promoting Liverpool as the ultimate destination for shoppers this season.
